Job Description

Midatech Pharma, a leading, clinical-stage drug delivery company, is developing novel ultra-long-acting therapeutics. Building on the pioneering Q-Sphera™ technology, Midatech Pharma is developing solutions to meet the complex needs of modern, small molecule and biologic-based drug products. We are seeking an Analytical Scientist to play a key role in the research and development of these novel formulations and technologies. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated team of scientists in performing physicochemical characterization and bioassay analysis of new biopharmaceutical & polymer formulations. Bringing energy, strong initiative and a problem-solving mindset the ideal candidate will have experience of performing and interpretation of protein analysis techniques.

Job Summary

Working on novel drug formulations, the position will involve the use of a broad range of analytical techniques including HPLC, UPLC and SEC/GPC, Mass spectrometry, CD spectroscopy and NMR; coupled with in-vitro bioassays such as antibody-binding & blockade or ELISA assays with colourimetric, fluorescence or luminescence-based end-points. The successful candidate will be familiar and have practical experience of these techniques, and be confident in synthesizing, interpreting and reporting raw data. Practical experience of preparing and analyzing proteins will be beneficial. Familiarity with early stage pharmaceutical development is desirable.

Specific Responsbilities

  1. Routine use of analytical instruments, including LC, SEC/GPC, MS, CD and in-vitro bioassays to characterise pharmaceutical & biopharmaceutical samples
  2. Set-up & perform new bioassays to characterize structure & function of protein-based biopharmaceuticals
  3. Report writing and interpretation of data for internal purposes and for external research partners
  4. Provide clear and frequent communication of results, sample status and equipment readiness
  5. Health and safety & risk-assessments
  6. Provide cross-function support when required
  7. Liaise with equipment and maintenance suppliers
  8. Support off-site analytical studies with third party vendors & CROs

Job Factors

Minimum education level Degree in Biochemistry or other related subject
Industrial experience Experience in a relevant industrial setting is highly desirable.
Supervision received by the role The successful candidate will report directly to the Lead Analytical Scientist and will be part of a broad-ranging multidisciplinary team involved in the development of new drug products.
Supervisory responsibility There are no requirements for the position to supervise other scientists at this time.
